As some of you already know, I painted a piece for a show at Rothick art haus and a week before the show it got destroyed by an acrylic clear coat that i sprayed on it.
This is how the piece looked before I sprayed the clear coat...
... and here's how it looked after the clear coat just a week before the show...
Since the show was only a week away, I didn't have time to paint something new or fix this piece so I had to give the gallery 3 of my older pieces. Which I didn't want to have to do.
After being in shock, depressed, super pissed off, nearly smashing the painting into pieces, and a shitload of alcohol, I finally calmed down enough to try and figure out a way to fix my painting.
Since the painting was on masonite and not canvas I was able to sand back as much of the clear coat as possible without completely losing the 2 months worth of work underneath it. I bought some 600 grit sand paper, which is very fine, and a sanding block and wet sanded it with soapy water.
The original painting had some very thin layers of paint in some areas and when i put the acrylic clear coat on, the masonite wood underneath sucked the moisture from the coating out too fast which is what caused it to buckle and crack in some areas. It was my first time ever using spray clear coat and masonite together so I had no idea that this would happen. Maybe I would have known had I ever gone to art school but I'm a self taught artist so, what are you gonna do ya' know? Whatever. Anyways, to make sure this didn't happen again I repainted an even thicker coat of oil paint over the clouds trying to let as much of the original under layer show through as possible.
I will continue to retouch this painting until it is even better than it was before and I'll keep posting pics of the progress. Until next time, later-
Isaac
